لجأت بي ام دبليو للمصمم جيوفاني ميشيلوتي والملقب مصمم سيارات الملوك في العام 1959 لتصميم بي ام دبليو 700 سبورت لتكون خلفاً لسابقتها 600 التي تم تدشينها في العام 1955 .
وفي العام 1960 ضهرت 700 سبورت الصغيره بعده طرازات منها الكوبيه والصالون حيث تم أنتاجها حتى العام 1965 بعدد 188211 سياره ، حقاً انه عدد كبير جداً
ولكن يوجد منها سياره السباقات النادرة والمميزة RS700
تعتبر RS الأولى عالمياً بهيكل أحادي والتي تم تجهيزها بمحرك خلفي مخصص للدراجات النارية من أسطوانتين سعته 697 cc بقوه 73 hp .
نافست RS700 العديد من سيارات السباق في فئتها مثل فيات ابارث وحققت نتائج عاليه في سباقات 12 ساعة واستخدمها العديد من سائقي السباقات العالميين في بطوله المانيا وبطولة هيملت وبطولة نوبرشرينق ومن هؤلاء السائقين بوركاد مؤسس ألبينا والسائق والتر شناير وهوربت وغيرهم .
تعتبر RS700 حالياً من أندر السيارات في العالم لاسيما انه لم يُنتج منها سوى 22 سياره فقط ويبدأ سعرها حالياً من 80 الف دولار .
